Abstract

A wideband balun is presented in this letter which makes full use of the vertical transition between microstip line and substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) through a coupling slot. The designed balun operates at millimeter-wave (mm-Wave) frequencies and does not need tight coupling part like Marchand baluns as frequently used in monolithic or hybrid integrated circuit design. This balun consists of two substrates, and an electric field transition through coupling slot achieving a 180° phase shift for the balanced ports. Proposed designed is validated by simulation and could easily obtain a FBW of 53% from 18.7 GHz to 32 GHz with larger than 10 dB return loss at the unbalanced port. Simulated results show that the excellent amplitude imbalance and phase difference between two balanced ports are less than 0.3 dB and ±2°, respectively.
