Abstract

The scientific monograph "University Chemistry Teaching in the 21st Century" is edited by Dr Iztok Devetak from the University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Education, and represents a valuable contribution to chemistry didactics in higher education. The monograph is divided into five chapters in which the authors, who come from six countries, address the problem of teaching and learning chemistry at university level in both science and non-science study programmes. The chapters are based on contributions from the EUROVARIETY 2021 conference organised by the University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Education and the Slovenian Chemical Society within the European Chemical Society in July 2021. The authors present different aspects of teaching and learning chemistry at university level, from teaching chemistry to future engineers using modern technology in analytical chemistry, to the use of models in organic chemistry courses, and how COVID-19 has impacted the performance of first year students in chemistry courses. The monograph concludes with a chapter highlighting the importance of ongoing professional development for STEM higher education teachers and staff to successfully develop their careers in teaching.   Number of pages: 115
