Abstract

Education for sustainable development (ESD) as part of the worldwide process to foster sustainable development (SD) is based on environmental education (EE), developed in the second half of the last century. In this understanding EE and later on ESD are working in the field of natural resources and their use by people. As a consequence EE and ESD were at the beginning mainly based on topics related to nature and environment, the environmental crisis and the search for solutions to associated problems. The second element of this type of EE and ESD is based on the idea helping students to develop a basic understanding of nature and its interaction with human life. This part of EE goes back even to the nineteenth century when educationalists and nature oriented philosophers thought about the relationships between people and nature.
