Abstract

Recently, WAVE/DSRC has become an attractive technology for vehicular safety applications. Vehicles with WAVE/DSRC device can communicate with their neighboring vehicles to exchange more information to achieve collaborative safety. According to the statistics in the United States, 2 million auto accidents happen at intersections causing 6700 fatalities each year, which is in strong demand for substantial reduction. This paper presents a WAVE/DSRC-based intersection collision warning system (ICWS) to detect potential car collisions at intersections. With the system, each vehicle periodically exchanges location information (e.g., position, moving speed, direction, and so on) with neighboring vehicles using WAVE/DSRC technology. After some deliberate calculation, ICWS thus can inform drivers whether they will collide with other vehicles at the next intersection. There are two main contributions from ICWS: (1) ICWS is a collaborative safety system that requires no support from infrastructure; (2) unlike previous collision warning systems, ICWS is a practical implementation and has been successfully integrated with a commercial navigation system.
