Abstract

A descriptive synthesis of the mesoscale currents measured by the USSR Polygon array is analyzed in terms of a local, baroclinic, advective, topographic model of quasigeostrophic waves. Fits of the synoptic patterns of both one and two waves are made: for either case the determination of all free parameters at one time and horizontal level allows predictions of the pattern propagation and vertical structure to be tested against the observations. The possibility of the waves being baroclinically unstable is also examined.
