Abstract

In this paper, we propose a virtual token dual bus (VTDB) architecture and medium access control protocol for the CDMA interconnection network (CIN) in a CDMA cellular mobile system. In order to accommodate mobile multimedia services such as high speed data, graphic, and moving picture services as well as existing voice and data services, the CDMA cellular mobile system must have an interconnection network that can exchange control and multimedia data at a high speed among the processors in the system. The VTDB protocol enhances the network performance by using the virtual token reservation scheme. This reservation scheme reduces the virtual token switchover time between nodes with messages during the medium access control time for a shared bus. Also, the VTDB protocol improves the performance and reliability of the network by using a dual bus architecture. It has about 1.6 Gbps throughput. We evaluate the performance of the VTDB protocol by using an analytical method and simulation.
