Abstract

Work teams face a number of well-known serious obstacles to collaboration. In this paper, we start by reviewing some of the problems, and then describe an attempt to deal with two of these challenges in the context of software development teams—the problem of geographical separation of team members, and the unsatisfactory state of project documentation. Our work addresses physical separation by offering virtual proximity via a virtual collaborative space customized for the project at hand. The documentation problem is addressed by allowing users to capture and access incidental information created informally during the development process, and use it to complement formal artifacts of the development process.
