Abstract

Abstract Because existing dynamical models of bubble formation are complex and non-unified, a dynamical model is proposed with a distinctive bubble detachment assumption that may provide a more unifying viewpoint on the dynamics of bubble formation. More than 800 experimental data points from 21 researchers have verified the simplified model of bubble formation and the assumption of bubble detachment. Some insights into the key features of bubble formation are discussed based on the mechanisms revealed by the dynamical models; a modified Weber number less than 1.25 × 10 − 3 is recommended as the criterion of the quasi-static regime, a model application scope is verified to be a Weber number less than 0.1 and the liquid dynamic viscosity smaller than 1.3 Pa ⋅ s, and the effects of each variable are presented in a physical viewpoint.
