Abstract
The route to the title bicyclic lactams starting from mono, di- or trisubstituted furans involves the oxidation of the furans with singlet oxygen in methanol followed by in situ reduction of the resultant hydroperoxide, the addition of an 1,2-aminoalcohol, and then a catalytic amount of TFA.
