Abstract

Abstract Because of the current widespread attention and interest in surface waves, whether in theoretical study or in applications, the significantly different application scales in diverse fields and the various complex media types with special properties necessitate an effective analysis tool for computing normal modes of surface waves for different models to meet all kinds of application demands. By further improving and generalizing the algorithm of generalized reflection and transmission coefficients, we propose a versatile solver of normal modes for horizontal stratified complicated models. Under a series of tests with commonly encountered models of various types and of abnormal medium properties (e.g., low-velocity layers included, fluid sandwiched), whether on the model adaptability, on the capability of the complete computation of the normal modes, or on the stability or computing efficiency, this solver fully demonstrates that it is a powerful tool for the theoretical calculation and inversion of surface waves.
