Abstract

A new kind of Čerenkov beam position monitor is described. The counter, though relatively simple and inexpensive, has high sensitivity, introduces a minimal amount of multiple scattering, and is capable of high spatial resolution over a wide range of beam currents. Measurements of the position of the SLAC electron beam to an accuracy of ±12mm have been made for electron currents from 20 nA to 10 mA.
