Abstract

A variational method is applied to the partition function of an electron in a lattice with diagonal disorder. Apart from yielding band-tail densities of states the method yields semi-quantitative information on localisation. It is also suggested that critical temperatures will arise separating localised and delocalised regimes; this is a feature shared with attempts to relate the localisation problem with solutions of Ginzburg-Landau mean field theories.
