Abstract

A variational study of the Anderson model with two spin- 1 2 impurities is presented. For an impurity separation R < 2.5( k F) −1, strong ferromagnetic correlations between the two impurity spins are found, and a spin-1 Kondo effect takes place at low temperature. For R > 2.5( k F) −1 the physics depends on the ratio between RKKY coupling and Kondo temperature T K. No anomalous behavior of the susceptibility is found.
