Abstract

We studied 173 patients with the metabolic syndrome (MS), mean age of 60 years. These patients were compared with 600 nondiabetic patients. Fifty-seven percent were males and 43% were females. The mean blood glucose in the MS group was 169 mg%; 97% were diabetic type 2, whereas 3% were diabetic type 1. Mean body mass was 30 kg/m2. The lipid profile of the MS group was normal, including total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, and triglycerides. No significant coronary disease or evidence of strokes was found among the patients studied.
