Abstract

This paper investigates a Variable Neighborhood Search (VNS) for a three-dimensional air traffic conflict resolution model. The conflict resolution problem in Air Traffic Management (ATM) is solved by changing the maneuvering dimensions of aircrafts, such as lateral and vertical maneuvers. Compared with existing methods, such as mixed-integer linear optimization approaches that change one or two dimensions of the velocity vector, our algorithm proposes three neighborhoods for conflict resolution based on changes in all three dimensions of the velocity vector of aircrafts. The approach could resolve both horizontal and vertical conflicts. Simulation studies demonstrate that aircrafts could perform various maneuvers to avoid collisions in a three-dimensional space.
