Abstract

It is now well-known that seeking to benefit the own group only can sometimes even achieve the opposite result under certain conditions. In this paper, I identify conditions under which this happens: when the beneficiary inter-group cooperation opportunity is undermined with a prisonders’ dilemma type tribal interest conflict, then the sole consideration of the own group’s interests even hurts the own group.
