Abstract

The relocation of a departmental chemistry library into a centralized academic library is felt most keenly by the primary users of the departmental library. The departmental library is a user-based system by nature. The main concern in the centralization project should be in convincing the Chemistry user group that the relocation is not a loss. Closing and relocating a branch requires extra sensitivity to this group. The emphasis should be placed on improved servces and collection management, rather than library administrative efficiency. The successful closure should highlight the human underpinning of a library.
