Abstract
A quantized gauge invariant formulation of a neutral vector field Λ μ is constructed. This field is unphysical but it is shown how the photon field equations in any covariant gauge as well as the neutral vector meson field equations can be derived from it. The related commutation relations are extracted from those of Λ μ and the appearance of a Schwinger term in the usual equal time commutator for the vector meson is clearly displayed.
