Abstract

Traditional codal method of design is force-based. It is hardly possible to design buildings with codal method satisfying some pre-defined target performance objectives under a specified hazard level. Some displacement-based design methods are available in literature for this purpose which take care of only the drift. A unified approach of design for RC moment resistant frame buildings is reported here which takes care of both design drift and intended member performance levels. Beams are proportioned from a theoretical treatment conforming to the target objectives. The proposed method has been validated by designing buildings of two plans with varying heights and various performance objectives. It has been found that the proposed method can satisfactorily achieve moment resistant RC frame buildings of given performance objectives under given hazard level.
