Abstract

Three-dimensional hollow urchin-like ZnO microspheres that combine one-dimensional nanorods and zero-dimensional nanoparticles building blocks have been successfully synthesized by two step hydrothermal growth, which is a facile, low-temperature and versatile method and do not need template. By adjusting the annealing temperature of first step and the reaction time of second step, unique and sophisticated urchin-like ZnO superstructures with the ability to control the sphere size in addition to the ZnO nanorod dimensions and morphology can be obtained. A possible growth mechanism for the formation of hollow urchin-like ZnO microspheres was also proposed.
