Abstract
A two-dimensional velocity analyser is described, for use in laboratory plasmas with an axial magnetic field. An applied electric field, perpendicular to the magnetic field, preferentially selects electrons depending on their initial parallel (axial) velocity component. Subsequent sampling of the selected electrons with a retarding potential analyser, in a region of reduced magnetic field, enables the authors to determine both perpendicular and parallel velocity components of the electrons. The characteristics of the instrument are discussed and measurements made with the prototype instrument are compared with the results from a computer simulation. Some applications of this instrument as a diagnostic tool for use with laboratory plasmas are given.
