Abstract

A heterobimetallic ReIVAgI sheetlike polymer of formula [Ag2ReCl6]n (1) has been prepared by reaction between acidified aqueous solutions of [ReCl6]2- and Ag+ ions. Its structure has been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and its magnetic behavior has been investigated in the temperature range 1.9−250 K. The hexachlororhenate(IV) unit is present in 1 and adopts the hexakis-monodentate coordination mode toward the silver(I) cations, which are three-coordinated, leading to a corrugated two-dimensional structure. Each layer is made up of octahedrons that share all of their edges, with the repeating unit being the single μ-chloro-bridged Re−Ag pair. The magnetic behavior of 1 corresponds to that of a three-dimensional antiferromagnet with a susceptibility maximum at 26 K. Short intra- and interlayer Re−Cl···Cl−Re contacts account for this antiferromagnetic ordering.
