Abstract

The paper presents a novel all-optical two bit asynchronous up counter using integrated 2D square lattice photonic crystals. The design of optical counter relies on optical SR flip flops are designed using the photonic crystals (PhC). The total size of the proposed optical counter is equal to 90 μm × 40 μm, and the structure has lattice constant ‘a’ is equal to 630 nm and band gap range from 0.32 to 0.44. The PhC structure has a square lattice of silicon rod with refractive index of 3.39 in air with permittivity of e = 10.1 × 10−11 F/m. The structure is simple, which make it suitable for all optical integrated circuit. Besides, the paper provides analytical and numerical simulation on the overall system using the dimensional finite difference time domain and plane wave expansion methods to confirm its operation and feasibility.
