Abstract

The paper begins by examining the four aspects of fault tolerance — error detection, damage assessment, error recovery and fault treatment — and describes how these aspects can be incorporated in systems. Following this, a methodology for the construction of robust software systems is presented, covering the topics of design fault tolerance and software implemented fault tolerance. Some aspects of modelling faulty behaviour of components is presented and the notion of a family of fault-tolerant algorithms is introduced.
