Abstract

ABSTRACTA new tunable 1060‐nm fiber ring laser based on a hybrid amplifier is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The hybrid amplifier includes an ytterbium‐doped fiber amplifier with a 70‐cm Yb‐doped fiber and a semiconductor optical amplifier. The proposed laser can provide low relative intensity noise and a narrow linewidth. According to experimental results, the laser output power can exceed 3 dBm and the wavelength tuning range reaches 45 nm from 1035 to 1080 nm under an optical side‐mode suppression ratio greater than 55 dB. Moreover, stable and flat laser output with negligible power fluctuations can be maintained for over 1 h. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 55:2892–2896, 2013
