Abstract

A Bioenergetic/control-theory psychology model is presented and utilized in the analysis of a psychotherapy case history. The patient was troubled with inadequate love relations, obesity, and confusion about her priorities in life. She demonstrated a typical pattern of intellectualizing in her approach to therapy as well as to other aspects of life. She rejected her body and expressed a preference not to have a body at all. The major therapeutic task was to aid her to "incorporate" (pun intended) her body into her self system, to learn to hear its signals, and to understand the connection between that and satisfaction in living. Her eventual understanding of, and acceptance of responsibility for, several physical "breakdowns" during the course of treatment ultimately contributed positively to the outcome.
