Abstract

ObjectivesMelasma is an acquired hyperpigmentation disorder of the skin which is characterized by symmetric and irregular patches on the sun exposed area of the face. Melasma has a high prevalence with long and costly treatments. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of an herbal combination product, including Cicer arietinum L. and Cucumis melo seeds on melasma as compared to 4% hydroquinone. MethodsThirty-two female patients with melasma which were more than 18 years of age, enrolled in the study and continued till the end. They applied Hydroquinone 4%, using 0.5 FTU (fingertip unit) on one side of the face and the prepared combined product (C. arietinum L. and C. melo seeds), using 0.5 FTU on the other side in a triple-blind manner for 12 weeks. The patients were evaluated every four weeks by digital photography, and melasma and severity index (MASI) scores. ResultsBoth creams reduced MASI score significantly (P < 0.001), but did not show any statically significant difference between the two halves of the face (P = 0.221). The results showed no severe and long side-effects of both creams. Most of the patients were satisfied with the result of the herbal combination product. ConclusionThe results showed that the herbal combination product (C. arietinum L. and C. melo seed) can be acceptable for patients with melasma and it can be an appropriate substitute for hydroquinone.
