Abstract

License plate recognition is usually divided into three stages that are license plate location, character segmentation, and character recognition, which is the most important stage. In recent years, many methods of character recognition have been proposed. This paper presents a mapping-based scheme of character recognition to improve the accuracy and efficiency of some previous methods. The proposed method divides each character to be recognized into three parts, and three edge histograms (EH) are created for each partial character to account for the eight different edges featured in this type of character recognition. Therefore, an edge histogram has eight features of a tripartite character, and each character is recognized by three or less edge histograms. In this paper, therefore, the proposed three-edge histogram extraction method is called tripartite edge histogram (TEH). Experimental results show an average recognition accuracy of 95.295% for the proposed scheme, and the recognition speed is 0.35 seconds per character.
