A tribute to Professor Jean Feldmann

Abstract

The International Phycological Society wishes to honour Professor Jean Feldmann on the occasion of his retirement. Professor Feldmann served as the first President of the Society in 1961 and greatly influenced the development of this organization. It would be difficult to imagine at what stage we would be in phycological science at the present time were it not for the co-operation of scientists on an international level. Not only have we often worked and published together, but we have had fine moments together in meetings, on field trips and at social events in various parts of the world. This development of international co-operation in phyco­ logy has always been strongly promoted by Professor Feldmann, and the finest type of tribute that we can dedicate to him as our first President is the con­ tinued active international co-operation in our phycological studies. Members of the International Phycological Society, who are interested in actively promoting one of the Society's primary objectives 'international co-operation among phycologists', may wish to contribute a membership in our Society to a phyco­ logist in a country where our membership dues are impossible to pay. There are great regions of the world that are unrepresented in our Society but in which there are at least a few phycologists. If you do not know such a phycologist, I am sure that our Secretary, Dr Sylvia Earle, would be happy to accept the donation, in any amount that you care to present, for membership of a phycologist that the Executive Council can name. I am sure that there could be no more deeply appreciated gift and tribute for Professor Feldmann on his retirement than to increase the international scope of membership in our Society.
