Abstract

WE undertook a single blinded crossover trial of oral magnesium supplementation in 15 hypomagnesemic renal transplant patients. The study was designed to determine (1) to what extent chronic oral magnesium supplementation would increase serum magnesium in this population; (2) whether magnesium supplementation would reduce blood pressure, lessen antihypertensive drug requirements, and/or improve lipid profiles; (3) the significance of side effects from the cathartic effects of magnesium compounds; and (4) the changes in renal magnesium excretion and serum electrolytes associated with magnesium therapy.
