Abstract

Thirty-one patients with medical disease who had high scores on the ‘Depression’ scale of the MMPI were randomized and treated with either imipramine or a lactose placebo in a ‘double blind’ study. The MMPI was readministered at the end of treatment. to measure change. In 14 patients the alternative drug was administered subsequently so that each of these patients also acted as his own control. No significant change in the ‘Depression’ score resulted from the use of imipramine, as compared with placebo. Such changes as occurred in this scale appeared to be an effect of lapse of time or anticipation of discharge, rather than of pharmacological potency. A slight reduction in the ‘Hypochondriasis’ scale was observed in subjects treated with the drug when compared with their controls.
