Abstract

POLYNUCLEAR clusters of platinum and palladium containing metal–metal bonds may serve as models of the surface of heterogeneous catalysts, and their reactions may mimic those on such surfaces1,2. Ligand-free metal clusters can be created in an ultradispersed condensed phase3, but they are difficult to isolate and characterize because of their high reactivities. Here we report the preparation of a tri-platinum diphosphine complex that con-tains a coordinatively 'naked' platinum atom. The metal cluster in this complex is electron-deficient relative to other tri-platinum complexes. Bonding of ligands to the naked platinum could reflect that of chemisorbed species on catalytic platinum surfaces.
