Abstract

Philla Davis was, by all accounts, a remarkable woman. Her list of interests and accomplishments alone indicate the agility of mind and hand that underpinned her creative skills. The list includes her life as a craftswoman (especially in basketry and textiles), a collector, a recorder of craftworking, a world-wide traveller, a botanist, an enthusiastic Girl Guide. In each she apparently achieved particular knowledge and dexterity. Her central interest in basketry techniques and creations led to her becoming a member of the Society for Folk Life Studies and she served on the Council for some three years. Yet, despite her versatility and her resourcefulness — which led her to having friends and acquaintances across the world — comparatively little is known about her. This article is intended to give a provisional outline of Philla Davis' life and work. It does not include all the biographical information gathered so far, but there is more needed to fill out the picture. I would especially welcome further information about her life, especially her travels and collections, and would be pleased to hear from anyone who knew her.
