Abstract
A study of the transferability of Urey-Bradley potential constants has been carried out with eighteen halomethanes: CX 4, CX 3Y, CX 2Y 2 and CX 2YZ, where X, Y and Z are the appropriate halogens. By using 38 force constants, good agreement between the 121 observed and calculated frequencies has been obtained in these molecules. The results lead to the reassignment of several fundamentals in CF 2I 2 and CF 2Cl 2, and confirmation of assignments in CX 2YZ: CF 2ClBr, CFCl 2Br and CFClBr 2; CX 2Y 2: CF 2Br 2 and CCl 2Br 2; CX 3Y: CF 3Cl, CF 3Br, CF 3I, CCl 3F, CCl 3Br, CBr 3F and CBr 3Cl; CX 4: CF 4, CCl 4, CBr 4 and CI 4.
