Abstract

It has long been recognized that the family is among the most critical mechanisms for the transmission of culture within our society. As a result, the processes by which socialization takes place and the circumstances associated with difficulties for the family have become critical areas of investigation for social scientists. Many different approaches have been adopted by investigators in a variety of areas, and at least some of these lines of research are now beginning to converge.
