Abstract

A trans‐Indian Ocean section along 29°–35°S consisting of 125 full ocean depth casts with a Conductivity, Temperature, Depth, Dissolved Oxygen (CTD/O2) profiler and discrete dissolved nutrient water sample analysis is tentatively scheduled for austral spring 1987 (Figure 1). This section, which complements the existing high‐quality observations along 18°S, will explore various aspects of the south Indian Ocean circulation, including the characteristics of various core water masses of this ocean, the zonal extent of the subtropical gyre (including the Agulhas Current) and its recirculation zone, the structure and transport of deep western boundary currents, and the net meridional fluxes of heat and fresh water. Assessment of interannual change may also be possible using historical data from these latitudes; two low‐resolution sections are available on 32°S.
