Abstract

In this paper we propose a traffic and quality control mechanism by band-limited ATM connection. The broadband nature of the information source traffic and the shared use of network resources as causes of uncertainty in traffic and quality are first studied from the viewpoints of communication band, traffic noise, transfer performance, and network stability. Based on these considerations, we propose a unified traffic and quality control mechanism by band-limiting function defined on the ATM layer, and describe their features from the standpoint of their functional arrangement, control methods, and network performance and stability. This paper also discusses a connection class control method, as a way of implementing these mechanisms, which allows network control levels to correspond flexibly to the diverse conditions of ATM applications and network resources.
