Abstract

Ugarit belongs to the world of the Near East by virtue of its language, its cultural and technical traditions, and its history. But because of its geographical position, which influences climate, vegetation, and cultivation, the coastal plain of Ugarit belongs as well to the same Mediterranean world as the shores of Cyprus or Greece. Yet Ugaritic epigraphy only mentions one actual location to the west, the Island of Alashiya, or Cyprus. No written documentation exists with which to gauge clearly trade and relations with other islands of the eastern Mediterranean and beyond with mainland Greece.
