Abstract

Harmonic drive (HD) is a complaint mechanism evolved from planetary drive with small teeth difference. Usually, the tip interference (TI) of the tooth pair easily occurs in HD. In this light, tip interference (TI) criteria are presented, and a tooth profile design method without tip interference (TI) is proposed. The tooth profile parameters are generated by sample points which consist of the conjugate points and tip points of the interference zone obtained from the elastic kinematics of HD. This method will achieve the tooth profile design quickly with high accuracy. A tooth profile design for a HD with an oval wave generator is conducted to verify the method. The results demonstrate that the designed tooth profile has high precision and a smooth transmission feature with good meshing qualities.
