Abstract

A unique TL ceramic dating service has been operational at the Durham TL Laboratory for 1 year. Its development has formed part of a research project to investigate the feasibility of a commercially-based dating service. A two tier structure for the service provides low overall accuracy (±20% of the TL age) survey dates and high overall accuracy (±5 to ±10% of the TL age) dates in a dating programme consisting of a minimum of ten sherds. The tests performed for survey dating allow us to examine the potential of samples for high accuracy dating and, in over 60% of cases, provided low accuracy survey dates. We describe the experimental procedures that are being used and discuss the dating results that have been produced, and the response by archaeologists to our two tier service. The service has also undertaken non-archaeological TL research work for other universities and commercial organisations.
