Abstract

Composite steel/concrete box girders are sensitive to fatigue problems. Several pathologies linked to these phenomena were detected on the Chamousset viaduct in 2014 and again in 2015: cracking of the longitudinal stiffeners, transverse stiffeners and bottom plate. Given the complexity of the phenomena involved, a methodology inspired by forensic engineering was put in place, combining refined computational analyses, instrumentation and physical investigations (destructive and non-destructive testing). Once these analyses had been carried out, two repair prototypes were designed before selecting just one for the overall repair of the structure.
