Abstract

The Elderberry Canyon Local Fauna, from the Sheep Pass Formation near Ely, Nevada, is represented by >40 vertebrate taxa, indicating an early Bridgerian (early middle Eocene) Age. More than 30 of the taxa are mammals, including five species of primitive ceratomorphs, one of which is described herein as a new genus and species. Perhaps the smallest perissodactyl known, this new form has nonmolariform premolars, teeth at P1/p1 positions, and no hypoconulid on m3. It is phylogenetically near Hyrachyus and Dilophodon . These genera are close to the origin of Rhinocerotoidea, and are rhinocerotoids if the superfamily is defined by loss of the hypoconulid on m3.
