Abstract

Geological and geographical times are also vast in terms of their scale and we know of several events which used to be heralded as the hallmark of geographical changes. Disappearance of species, evolution of new species etc. are well-known representations of such vast time scales. But in Kerala and in many other places, at least major geographical events are occurring in a short span and many such phenomena occur in front of the present generation. What prompted this short piece is the recent floods in Kerala which caused havoc by killing people due to landslides, displacing people from their homes, destroying homes and valuable properties by the surging waters and creating outbreak of diseases including H1N1 and other infections. More than 100 people lost their lives and many people are still missing. Over lakhs people had to stay in camps set up in schools.
