Abstract

The popularity of television and its acceptance into family life are unparalleled in human history. However, family professionals have been complacent regarding their involvement in television education, policy, and research. In this article, some of the factors that have led to these complacent attitudes and responses are identified. The implications of helping families cope with television are discussed and specific suggestions for intervention are identified. Family professionals can begin to help families maximize the potential and minimize the undesirable effects of television by reexamining their perceptions of television and family life.
