Abstract

Time-resolved ESR spectra have been observed for the lowest excited triplet states of 1-nitronaphthalene and 1,4-dinitronaphthalene in EPA at 77 K. The results show that the sublevel preferentially populated by intersystem crossing is T y in both molecules studied ( y is close to the in-plane long axis of the naphthalene ring) and there is a strong vibronic coupling between the 3ππ* and the close-lying 3nπ* states.
