Abstract

Vehicular traffic congestion often occurs on the main roads of most cities as the number of vehicles grows, wasting the time and fuel of motorists. One important reason for traffic congestion is a lack of timely information on traffic conditions. In this paper, a time and area limited epidemic forwarding method is proposed to alleviate traffic congestion. This method broadcasts traffic congestion information at the related road segments within a single message lifetime via epidemic forwarding to the vehicles that will be affected by the congestion. The proposed method has been proven to overcome problems such as single flooding broadcast storms, the inability of one-hop broadcasting to cover the entire area needed, and the disconnection of multi-hop broadcasting. Our simulation results show that vehicular traffic congestion can be alleviated or eliminated using the proposed method.
