Abstract

A model for the prediction of case depth in laser surface transformation hardening is presented. The model is based on closed solutions to the problem of three-dimensional heat flow in plates with finite as well as infinite thickness. A simple approximate expression for three-dimensional heat flow in semi-infinite plates is also given. The validity of the model was tested on four different steels. The experimental values obtained were within ±20% of the predicted values over the entire range of processing speeds.A model for the prediction of case depth in laser surface transformation hardening is presented.
