Abstract

Sutong Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge across Yangtze River with a main span of 1088m. The bridge site conditions can be characterized as an expansive river, with fast flowing tides and deep currents, thick Quaternary period sediments, complicated weather and also heavy traffic. Furthermore, the riverbed here is easily subject to scour. This article outlines the technical challenges encountered in both the design and construction stages such as scour protection, lowering the steel cofferdams, construction platform establishment, stay cable fabrication, closure and the corresponding solutions.
