Abstract

The latest refinements of the fission barrier pinpointed the occurence of a third minimum. This paper reviews the search for such a minimum through high energy resolution fission probability measurements. After successful experiments with neutrons, deuteron beams were used. Higher J spin members of a pair of rotational bands with opposite parities were found, in the (d, pf) experimental results, as expected. The experimental fission barrier parameters are compared to the theoretical calculations obtained from the macroscopic-microscopic model and the purely microscopic one. The properties of nuclei at the third minimum deformation are also discussed.
