Abstract

The Si-Al-O-N system has been thermodynamically reassessed due to the new model used for liquid in the Al 2O 3-SiO 2 binary system and new experimental data in the Al 2O 3-AlN system. The β′-sialon phase is described by a new model, (Al 3+,Si 4+) 3 (O 2−,N 3−) 3(N 3−) 1, and a set of new parameters was found to describe better the experimental behaviour phase diagram and the β′-sialon stability in the system even at reasonably low temperatures. Phase diagrams calculated using the new assessment are presented.
